Paid Search Intelligence Services & Audit: Beyond Software: 6 AI, Data Science Solutions for Google Ads Accounts
Where your Google Ads data is hiding waste
- 1Value signal does bidding know which customers are worth more
- 2Budget split where the next pound or dollar returns the most
- 3Performance Max which placements earn value and which only spend
- 4Ad fatigue where frequency is hurting response
- 5Invalid traffic bots, junk leads and fake conversions in your data
- 6Search term drift how far broad match strays from your intent
- 7Tracking quality whether the data the models need is trustworthy
- 8Priority which two or three solutions to start with
Career figures, not campaign results. Client names are in the portfolio; no CPA or ROAS figures are shown without data behind them.
Paid Search Intelligence Statistics & Key Facts
Paid search intelligence starts with facts about how the platform actually works. These are the ones this page is built on, mostly from Google’s own help pages, with where each one comes from.
| Fact | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Max reach | Can serve across all Google Ads inventory, including YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps | Google Ads Help, About Performance Max campaigns |
| Performance Max reporting | Channel performance, placement reports and asset-level metrics are available | Google Ads Help, About Performance Max campaigns |
| Invalid clicks | Clicks that don't represent genuine interest: accidental, automated (bots) or manual clicks meant to raise costs | Google Ads Help, Invalid clicks |
| Google's filtering | Detected invalid clicks are filtered and not charged; credits can follow if found after billing | Google Ads Help, Invalid clicks |
| IP exclusion limit | Up to 500 IP addresses per campaign; Performance Max needs account-level exclusions | Google Ads Help, Exclude IP addresses |
| Guarantees | No one can guarantee a specific ad position or result | Google Ads Policy Help, third parties |
| Your data | Advertisers have the right to know clicks, impressions and total cost | Google Ads Policy Help, third parties |
| Competitor tools | Estimate rivals' ads and budgets from sampled results; useful for direction, not for setting your bids | Practice standard |
| Who does the work | Usman Saeed, personally; office in Gulberg III, Lahore, Pakistan, serving advertisers abroad | usmansaeed.net |
Google already filters the invalid clicks it detects, and the IP exclusion list stops at 500 addresses a campaign. What stays in your data is the traffic that got through, and it keeps teaching your bidding the wrong lessons until someone finds it.
What Is Paid Search Intelligence?
Paid search intelligence is the analysis that tells you why your paid search spend performs the way it does, and what to change. Most definitions stop at competitor research: rivals’ keywords, ads and estimated budgets. That is market intelligence. It tells you what others are doing, not where your own money is leaking.
The paid search intelligence on this page goes further: it joins your Google Ads data with your analytics and sales data, applies AI and data science to it, and turns the findings into changes the account can act on. It is a solution and a service, not a report.
The Three Layers of Paid Search Intelligence
Think of paid search intelligence in three layers. Most software covers the first; standard account management covers part of the second. The six solutions below live in the third, where the decisions are made.
Competitors' keywords, ads, estimated spend and auction overlap.
Answers: who am I up against?
Your own campaigns, search terms, placements and conversions at raw data level.
Answers: where is my money going?
Models on your account, analytics and sales data: value, budgets, fraud, drift.
Answers: what should change, and by how much?
Six Paid Search Problems That Never Raise a Red Flag
None of these show up as an alert in the account. The dashboard looks healthy while each one quietly moves money to the wrong place. Each maps to one of the six paid search intelligence solutions below.
Paying for sales you would have got anyway
Brand and returning-customer conversions inflate reported return.
Bidding blind to customer value
A first purchase of 40 and a customer worth 600 look identical to the bidding.
Budgets split by habit
Last month's split repeated, while some campaigns are past the point of return.
Placements hidden in aggregates
Low-value Performance Max placements averaged in with good ones.
Junk traffic training the bidding
Bots and fake leads counted as conversions teach the algorithm to find more.
Search terms drifting
Broad match serving on distant queries, polluting the data bidding learns from.
How Paid Search Intelligence Works: From Raw Data to Decisions
Every solution runs through the same paid search intelligence pipeline. Data comes from the API rather than the dashboard, because the API holds the detail the interface summarises away. It is joined with what happened after the click, modelled, explained, and only then turned into changes in the account.
Raw data
- Google Ads API: search terms, placements, assets, clicks
- Analytics sessions and behaviour
- Orders, CRM and lead outcomes
- Costs and margins
One account history
- Click, session and customer joined
- Junk and duplicates flagged
- Value and margin attached
- Stored in a warehouse you own
AI & data science
- Customer value prediction
- Diminishing-returns curves
- Clustering and anomaly detection
- Semantic similarity scoring
Explained findings
- What is wasting money, with how much
- Why, in plain language
- What to change first
- Expected effect and risk
Back into the account
- Conversion values
- Budgets and bid targets
- Negatives and exclusions
- Placement and frequency controls
Paid Search Intelligence Built on Custom Models, Not Tool Reports
None of the six solutions comes out of a tool. There is no box to type a domain into and no shared database behind them. Each one is a model I build on your account’s raw data, using machine learning, deep learning, statistics and AI techniques chosen for the problem, and then check by hand before anything changes.
That combination is the point: data science to build the models, years of paid search consulting to judge what the findings mean, and supervision of every step so a model never acts on its own. The specific algorithms stay in-house; what you see is what each model found, why, and what it is worth.
Same answer for everyone who asks the same question.
An answer that exists only for your account.
How Each Paid Search Intelligence Solution Is Built: The Model Cycle
Every paid search intelligence solution goes through the same eight-stage cycle. Four stages are data science, two are consulting judgement, two are supervision. Each stage has a person accountable for it, and the cycle repeats for as long as the solution runs.
- Data scientist
1. Raw data audit
Pull raw account, analytics and sales data; check what can be trusted.
- Data scientist
2. Feature engineering
Turn clicks, sessions and orders into signals a model can learn from.
- Data scientist
3. Model building
Train several candidate models built for this specific problem and account.
- Data scientist
4. Validation
Test on data the model never saw; reject it if it can't beat a simple baseline.
- Consultant
5. Expert review
Read every finding against how the account, market and business really work.
- Consultant
6. Controlled rollout
Change the account in stages, with your approval and a baseline to compare.
- Supervisor
7. Monitoring
Watch live results and model drift; AI agents flag anything unusual.
- Supervisor
8. Retraining
Refit models as new data, seasons and competitors change the account.
Solution 1: Predictive Value Bidding for Paid Search
Bidding optimises for the value you send it. If every conversion carries the same value, it learns to find cheap conversions, not valuable customers. This solution gives it a better number to chase. Full detail on customer LTV prediction.
An average customer value hides two groups: one-time buyers and customers who come back for years. Bidding treats them the same, so it keeps buying more of the cheaper group.
Data: Orders, customers, products, returns and margins.
Method: Customer value prediction: each new customer gets an expected value soon after the first conversion, checked against what past customers really spent.
Predicted value sent back as conversion value, so value-based bidding aims for customers worth more over time.
Solution 2: Budget Portfolio Optimisation Across Campaigns
Budgets are usually split by last month’s results or by which campaign feels important. Each campaign has a point where extra spend stops paying. This solution finds it and splits budget accordingly.
One campaign is starved while another is past the point where extra spend adds return. The total looks fine, but the mix is costing you.
Data: Spend, conversions and value per campaign over time.
Method: Diminishing-returns curves for each campaign, then a portfolio optimisation that balances expected return against risk.
A recommended budget split with the reasoning and expected change, refreshed as data builds up.
Solution 3: Performance Max Analysis Beyond Native Reporting
Performance Max can serve across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps. Native reports now show channels and placements, but not which of them bring customers worth having. This solution joins those reports with your outcome data.
Placements that earn value and placements that only consume spend sit in the same averages.
Data: Placement, channel and asset group data from the API, joined with analytics and sales outcomes.
Method: Clustering placements and asset groups by the value they produce, and analysing which creative and audience signals line up with good results.
Lists of placements to exclude or watch, and asset-group changes, with the spend at stake.
Solution 4: Ad Fatigue and Frequency Diagnostics
One frequency cap for every audience over-serves people who tire fast and under-serves people who need more reminders. This solution measures how fast response falls for each group.
Response drops as people see the same ads again, at different speeds for different segments and formats.
Data: Frequency and performance by segment and format, at the aggregate level the platform provides.
Method: Time-to-fatigue (survival) analysis: how long until response falls off, by segment and format.
Different frequency caps and creative refresh timing for each segment and format.
Solution 5: Invalid Traffic and Lead Quality Filtering
Google filters the invalid clicks it detects. What gets through, from bots to repeat junk enquiries, ends up counted as conversions, and bidding learns to find more of it. This solution looks for the patterns that don’t fit your real customers.
Fake or junk conversions train bidding to buy the wrong traffic, and inflate reported results.
Data: Click data from the API joined with analytics sessions and lead outcomes from your CRM.
Method: Anomaly detection tuned to your own traffic: odd timing, bot-like sessions, locations that don't match your market, impossible conversion paths.
Exclusions, lead-quality scores fed back into conversion data, and evidence for credit requests.
Solution 6: Semantic Search Term Control for Broad Match
Broad match finds new searches, and some of them are far from what you sell. Reviewing search terms once a week is too slow. This solution scores every new search term by how close its meaning is to your keywords, continuously.
Distant search terms waste spend and feed bidding with conversions you don't want more of.
Data: Your keywords, landing pages and the search terms report.
Method: Semantic similarity scoring with language embeddings: each search term gets a distance from what you actually offer.
Out-of-range terms added to negative lists automatically, and borderline ones flagged for review.
Which Paid Search Intelligence Solution Do You Need?
Few accounts need all six. Most need two or three, and the audit decides which. These symptoms are where to start.
| What you see | Likely cause | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Return looks high, but sales aren't growing | Paying for sales you would have got anyway; bidding blind to value | Solutions 1 and 2 |
| Cost per conversion is fine, but customers don't come back | Bidding optimises for cheap conversions | Solution 1 |
| Some campaigns are capped, others underspend | Budget split by habit | Solution 2 |
| Performance Max takes most of the budget | Low-value placements hidden in aggregates | Solution 3 |
| Display or video results fade after a few weeks | Ad fatigue | Solution 4 |
| Lots of leads, few real ones | Junk traffic training the bidding | Solution 5 |
| Search terms report full of strange queries | Broad match drift | Solution 6 |
How the Six Paid Search Intelligence Solutions Work Together
The order matters. A value model trained on fake conversions is precise and wrong. That is why the inputs are cleaned first, then the value is fixed, and only then is the budget moved.
- 1
Clean the inputs
Solutions 5 and 6
Remove junk traffic and distant search terms first, so models learn from real customers.
- 2
Fix the value
Solution 1
Give bidding a value that reflects real customers.
- 3
Fix the structure
Solutions 3 and 4
Cut low-value placements and fatigued frequency.
- 4
Fix the money
Solution 2
Split budget on the cleaned, value-based curves.
Paid Search Intelligence Software vs a Paid Search Intelligence Service
Paid search intelligence software and platforms are good at watching the market. They can’t join your clicks to your margins, fit a model to your account, or decide what to change. That is the gap a service fills. I call it Cognitive Intelligence, compared with rented SaaS.
Many clients keep a competitor tool and use these solutions alongside it. Tools are named for orientation only; I’m not affiliated with any of them. More on SaaS vs Cognitive Intelligence.
| Software and platforms | Intelligence service | |
|---|---|---|
| What it watches | Competitors: their keywords, ads and estimated budgets | Your account: value, budgets, placements, traffic, search terms |
| Data source | Sampled search results and third-party panels | Your raw API data, analytics and sales records |
| Accuracy | Estimates; useful for direction | Your actual numbers |
| Method | Same rules and reports for every customer | Models fitted to your account and market |
| Business context | None: no margins, returns or lead outcomes | Joins clicks to what customers were really worth |
| Output | Dashboards and alerts | Explained findings, sized in money, with changes made |
| Who acts on it | Your team | Changes pushed into the account with your approval |
| Ownership | Data stays in the vendor's platform | Data, models and code stay with you |
| Cost model | Monthly subscription per seat or spend tier | Scoped engagement after the audit |
| Best for | Ongoing competitor monitoring | Finding and fixing waste inside the account |
Paid search intelligence platforms, by what they do

| PPC management and audit | Optmyzr, Adalysis | Rule-based checks and bulk changes |
| Brand protection | BrandVerity | Trademark bidding and affiliate monitoring |
| Click-fraud tools | Dedicated fraud-blocking products | Blocking suspicious IPs with generic rules |

How to Choose a Paid Search Intelligence Provider: 8 Questions
Whether you’re choosing paid search intelligence software or a service, these questions separate analysis from reporting.
Do you work from raw data or the dashboard?
The interface hides the detail.
Can you size each finding in money?
Waste should have a number.
How do you tell fake conversions from real ones?
Joined to lead or sale outcomes?
What value does bidding optimise for?
And should it be different?
How will you prove a change worked?
Against a baseline, not a feeling.
Who owns the data and models?
You should.
Which solutions don't we need?
Good providers say so.
Do you guarantee a CPA or ROAS?
If yes, walk away.
Red flags
Who Paid Search Intelligence Solutions Are For (and Not For)
These paid search intelligence solutions pay off where spend is large enough for waste to matter, and where the data exists to find it.
Good fit
- E-commerce advertisers with repeat customers and large Shopping or Performance Max spend
- B2B and lead generation where lead quality matters more than lead count
- Competitive, fraud-exposed industries such as legal, finance and home services
- Marketing teams that must justify spend to finance
- Agencies that want deeper diagnostics for their clients
Not a fit
- Very small accounts where possible waste is smaller than the work
- No conversion tracking and no plan to fix it
- You want someone to run day-to-day campaigns only
- You want a guaranteed CPA or ROAS

More on the about page.
Written from my own practice, then checked against Google's help pages for Performance Max, invalid clicks, IP exclusions and working with third parties. I also reviewed the pages, tool lists and guides that rank for paid search intelligence in the UK and US. Those were used for research only and are not linked; tools are named for orientation, with no affiliation.
Key Takeaways: Paid Search Intelligence
- Paid search intelligence is more than competitor research; the biggest waste is usually inside your own account.
- Software watches the market. A data science service joins your clicks to real outcomes and decides what to change.
- Six solutions: value bidding, budget portfolios, Performance Max analysis, ad fatigue, invalid traffic and search term control.
- Each solution is a custom model built on your raw data and reviewed by a data scientist and a paid search consultant, not a tool report.
- Clean the inputs first: junk traffic and drifting search terms make every later model wrong.
- Every finding should be sized in money and tested against a baseline.
- No one can guarantee a CPA or ROAS; the audit shows what is realistic.
Paid Search Intelligence: FAQs
What is paid search intelligence?
Paid search intelligence is the analysis that explains why paid search spend performs as it does and what to change. It covers market data on competitors, your own account data, and models that turn both into decisions.
How is this different from paid search intelligence software?
Software mostly watches competitors using sampled data. This service works on your own raw account, analytics and sales data, fits models to it, and makes the changes with you.
Which paid search intelligence platforms do you use?
Competitor tools such as Semrush or SpyFu are useful for market direction. The six solutions run on your Google Ads API data, analytics, a data warehouse and custom models.
What are the six solutions?
Predictive value bidding, budget portfolio optimisation, Performance Max analysis, ad fatigue diagnostics, invalid traffic and lead quality filtering, and semantic search term control.
Are these solutions a tool or software?
No. Each one is a custom model built on your account’s raw data with machine learning, statistics and AI techniques, then reviewed by me as data scientist and paid search consultant before any change is made.
Which algorithms do you use?
Whichever fit the problem and your data, chosen by testing several candidates. The specific methods stay in-house; you see what each model found, why, and what it is worth.
Do I need all six?
Rarely. Most accounts need two or three. The free audit decides which, based on where the waste actually is.
What does the API show that the dashboard doesn't?
Detailed search term, placement and asset data that can be joined with analytics sessions and sales outcomes. The interface summarises most of it away.
Can you see inside Performance Max?
Partly. Channel, placement and asset reports, joined with your outcome data, show where value comes from. Google’s internal logic stays hidden.
How is this different from a click-fraud tool?
Fraud tools block IPs with general rules. This models your own traffic, links it to lead and sale outcomes, and feeds the findings into conversion data, not only block lists.
Doesn't Google already filter invalid clicks?
Yes, for the ones it detects, and you aren’t charged for them. The traffic that gets through still trains your bidding, which is what this solution finds.
Can you block bad search terms before they cost anything?
No. Meaning-based scoring cuts the reaction time from a weekly review to near-continuous, which limits the cost.
Is this a paid search audit?
It starts with one: a free paid search intelligence audit on raw data, delivered within one day, read-only. Enterprise advertisers can extend it across accounts and markets.
Does this replace our agency?
No. It is diagnosis and data science, and often runs alongside an existing agency or in-house team.
Can you guarantee a lower CPA or higher ROAS?
No. No one can guarantee ad results. What you get is waste identified and sized in money, and changes tested against a baseline.
What size of account is this for?
Accounts where possible waste is larger than the cost of finding it, usually with steady monthly spend and several campaigns. The audit confirms it.
Which countries do you work with?
Mainly the UK, US and Canada, plus Europe and the Gulf, all remotely from my office in Lahore, Pakistan.
What data access do you need?
Read-only access to Google Ads and analytics for the audit. Sales or CRM data comes later, for the value and lead-quality solutions.
Who owns the data and models?
You do. Data sits in a warehouse you control, and models and code are yours.
How does this connect to customer LTV prediction?
Solution 1 uses the same customer value prediction described on the customer LTV page, sent back to bidding as conversion value.
